Naily Zaman brings pride for SOS Children’s Villages and Bangladesh from ‘Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011’
Naily Zaman of SOS Children’s Village Dhaka clinched Gold and Silver Medal from the ‘XIII Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011’ held from June 25 to July 04, 2011. Naily got Gold Medal in 4X100M relay race and Silver Medal in 100M race. Naily also took part in 200M race, but unfortunately she could not get any medal in that discipline.
Over 7,500 Special Olympic athletes from 185 countries including 40 athletes from Bangladesh competed in a total of twenty-two sports and were displayed their skills, determination and courage for the world this year. The opening ceremony of the games took place on 25 June 2011 at the Panathinaiko Stadium which is also known as Kallimarmaro Stadium and the closing ceremony was held on 04 July 2011 at the same stadium. The Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011 was not only a true world-class sports event, but also a humanitarian experience where athletes and fans came together for 10 days in an atmosphere of inclusion and respect for all.
Naily becomes very happy bringing pride for SOS Children’s Villages and Bangladesh. Her SOS Mother - Ms. Aleya Begum expressed that she had believe that her daughter will bring at least one medal. ‘After winning the gold medal, my head coach and teammates started shouting and dancing with me and other three members of our relay race team and huge noise from the gallery also coming like Bangladesh, Bangladesh; it was really amazing and definitely the best ever delightful moment for me’ – Naily was saying.
Before going to Greece on June 21, 2011 Naily was under tight training session in the ‘Bangladesh Krira Shikhya Protisthan’ (BKSP) (Bangladesh Sports Training Institute) with other members of ‘Team Bangladesh’.
The National Director and Deputy National Director of SOS Bangladesh along with the visiting guest Ms. Nidhi Pundhir, Deputy Director, Programme Development, SOS Children’s Villages International, Continental Office – ASIA, the Project Director and everybody visited Naily in her house today on 06 July 2011 after her returning from Athens. They congratulated Naily for her outstanding performance in the Special Olympics. Everybody was coming in Naily’s house to congratulate her and share their joys. The girl was also found sharing her experience with lot of excitement. Several photo sessions took place as well on that glorious occasion.
Naily Zaman is a 19 year old mentally challenged girl of House `MAYABI’ No. 13 of SOS Children’s Village Dhaka. She was a student of `Special Education Classes’ in the ‘School for Intellectually Disabled’ which is run by an NGO named Society for the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled, Bangladesh (SWID, Bangladesh). Recently, she completed a skill training course from the UCEP Dhaka Technical School.
