SOS Children’s Villages Bangladesh observed National Mourning Day

National Mourning Day is observed annually on 15 August which marks the sorrowful assassination of the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with his beloved family members in 1975.

Like every year, this year SOS Children’s Villages Bangladesh commemorated the day arranging various programmes that capture the essence of both remembrance and respect. The national flag of Bangladesh was hoisted at half-mast in every Children’s Village and SOS Hermann Gmeiner College/Schools premises symbolizing the nation's mourning and acknowledging the loss.

Different programme locations arranged thought-provoking discussion sessions, special prayer, drawing competitions, essay writing competition on topics like ‘Mournful 15 August’, ‘Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’, ‘Bangabandhu and his life’ etc., poetry recitations and handwriting competitions. Documentaries and video clips were shown in an attempt to provide a visual portrayal of Bangabandhu's remarkable journey, illustrating his contributions to the liberation war.

Prizes were distributed among the winners of the above-mentioned competitions. Participants, including children, young people, mothers and co-workers, adorned black badges in different programme locations to signify their shared grief and deep respect.

Ashique, a child from SOS Children’s Village Sylhet said, “The foundation of our nation was built on the dedication and selflessness of individuals like Bangabandhu. We should build our lives according to his ideology.”
