Dhaka, the vibrant capital of Bangladesh, is a dynamic megacity stands as a thriving hub of culture, education, and commerce in South Asia.
In the aftermath of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, Prof. Hermann Gmeiner, Founder President of SOS-Kinderdorf International, visited the newly independent nation in 1972. Accompanied by Mr. Helmut Kutin former President of SOS Children’s Villages International. Prof. Hermann Gmeiner proposed the establishment of SOS Children’s Villages in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh warmly welcomed the initiative and signed an agreement with the organization on 17 May 1972.
Later that same year, SOS Children's Village Dhaka was founded on 2.54 acres of land in the Shamoli area of the capital. The first group of children began their new lives on 31 August 1972, laying the foundation for a nurturing and loving environment. The Village was officially inaugurated on 10 February 1974 by the then President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mohammad Ullah.
Today, SOS Children’s Village Dhaka comprises 15 family houses, grouped into three wings with five houses each. Every home accommodates 6 to 8 children, boys and girls of varying ages, under the care of dedicated SOS mothers. The Village is thoughtfully designed with social and educational facilities that ensure vulnerable children enjoys a secure, joyful, and fulfilling childhood.
